-
Choose your recommenders
carefully. If the college requests a teacher recommendation, choose a
teacher who knows you well and is familiar with your strengths in the
classroom.
-
If you know what your
college major will be, try to choose a recommender who worked with you
in that area.
-
Choose recommenders who
write well and are willing to take the time to make the letter as
personal as possible and can include specific examples of your
attributes.
-
Be understanding if your
request is declined.
-
Make your request
specific. Tell them who their audience is and a little background.
Tell them your goals and aspirations. Let them know what you want to
major in or why you want to attend a particular school.
-
Be sure your recommender
knows your deadline and give them at least a week to write it. Keep in
mind time needed for mailing.
-
Give your recommender
instructions on what to do with the recommendation once it is complete.
Provide your recommenders with addressed, stamped envelopes if they are
to mail the recommendation separately.
-
Let them know if the
recommendation will be confidential or if you will have access to it.
-
Ask the recommender to
save the recommendation on their computer (or a hard copy) in order to
provide future recommendations to other addresses.
-
Say “thank you.” Let your
recommenders know what happened and what college choice you have made.
