English Language Learners (ELL)
All students grades 2 to 10 must demonstrate a level of English language competency. These English language admission requirements vary by grade level, but mastery of the English language must be obtained at the 11th and 12th grades.
The English Language Learners (ELL) program at Dakar Academy Schools is designed to assist non-native English speakers to function in the general education classroom, offering both social and academic language skills. Any non-native English-speaking student applying to DA must be tested in the following areas of English proficiency:
Oral language- listening and speaking
Literacy- reading and writing
If a student scores as non-fluent in any of those areas, he/she is eligible to receive ELL services. After reviewing the test scores, the ELL teachers and administrators will discuss grade and class placement of the student and ELL teachers create an Individual Learning Plan for each student based on his/her unique needs. At the end of each academic year, each student receiving ELL services is formally assessed to determine the need for continued support. If you have questions about our ELL support services and our admission requirements please email Vanessa Power at vanessa.power@dakar-academy.org for details.
